Please God …

Gtcotr/ss040818

My hope today is to encourage you to make God happy. How can a person make God happy? Here are ten things from Exodus 20:2-17, that God says makes Him happy. (With commentary)

1
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. (verses 2&3)
2
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My Commandments. (verses 4-6)
3
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. (verse 7)
4
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (verses 8-11)
5
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. (verse 12)
6
“You shall not murder. (verse 13)
7
“You shall not commit adultery. (verse 14)
8
“You shall not steal. (verse 15)
9
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (verse 16)
10
“You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.” (verse 17)

Verses used in Commentary:

Matthew 6:24  “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 5 NKJV
20  “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 ¶  “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’
22  “But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. …
27 ¶  “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
28  “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
31  “Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’
32  “But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
33 ¶  “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’
34  “But I say to you, do not swear at all: …
37  “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
38 ¶  “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
39  “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40  “If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
41  “And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
42  “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
43 ¶  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44  “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45  “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
48  “Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Luke 6:31  “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.”

Matthew 22 NKJV
35  Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
36  “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37  Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38  “This is the first and great commandment.
39  “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40  “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
