Genesis 6
1 ¶ And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 ¶ And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 ¶ There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 ¶ And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
I. Things We Know
A. This is approximately 1550 years after the creation of Adam.
B. The population was increasing. (each time multitudes increase, it seems like trouble follows: Acts 6:1)
C. Something disturbed God so that He decided to limit man’s natural lifespan to 120 years.
D. This limit did not go into affect immediately but evident changes did begin to occur.

II. Things We Do Not Know
A. Who or what is referred to by the terms:
1. Sons of God
2. Daughters of Man
Note:
* Two Prevailing Opinions
> John Gill’s Expositor for example: Relates the Sons of God as descendents of Seth, Adam’s third son, and the daughters of man as descendents of Cain, Adam’s first son who killed his brother Abel and was driven from the presence of the Lord. He explains this as a marriage between the true followers of God and the earthly, base children of lost humanity. These unholy unions produced, in his opinion, a race of apostates from the true religion.
> Eclectic Notes for example: Which specify that the Sons of God were angelic beings, fallen and rebellious, perhaps cast to the earth in the heavenly battle, wishing to return to the heavens to rule found prey upon the daughters of mankind, beautiful and weak, made in the image of God, and fell upon them producing a giant rebellious race of being, men of renown who were mighty and super human, half god and half man. Herein we find credence to the mythical characters and great fetes of exploit coupled with mystical power and super human strength. Perhaps these tales were woven from the fabric of what is vaguely shadowed within these few scriptures.
