Called To Lead By Example

We’re going to be looking at Deuteronomy 6:4-9   The Shema
Deuteronomy 6:4  "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
5  "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6  "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
7  "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
8  "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
9  "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

1.  He must be Lord
Deuteronomy 6:4  "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
            I want you to see how this expression is used elsewhere in the Bible
            Zechariah 14:9 And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it    shall be--"The LORD is one," And His name one.
He must be our God AND Supreme, with no rival.  Hear means to hear and obey

2.  Love Him completely with nothing held back. 
Vs. 5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Love: Primary meaning :Love, affection, appetite
Heart: the inner man in contrast with the outer man (flesh), comprehending mind, affections and will
Soul: Living being, life, self, person, desire, appetite, emotion, and passion
Strength: Force

3.  His Word must be in your thoughts 
Vs. 6  "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
Psalm 1: 1-2  Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;  But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

4.  You must teach your children God’s Word
Vs. 7  "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up
Do you see what comes before teaching them to your children? 
They have to first be real in your life
 "You shall teach them diligently to your children, You as the leader of your home have the primary responsibility to teach your children

5.  His Word must be a part of your everyday conversation in your home
 and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (They need to be a part of your everyday life that you TALK about to your children.  Why are you making the decisions that your making.  In what way is the Word of God impacting your life?

6.  God’s Word rules what you do
Vs. 8  "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand,…
(you act on what you really believe, not what you say you believe. If you don’t really believe it, and show it by your actions, why should they) Calling in sick when your not sick.  Your standard is not what the rest of the world does.

7.  God’s Word rules what you look at and what you think 
… and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
What do you look at and what are you thinking?  What you think will eventually become action

8.  God’s Word is the standard in your home 
Vs. 9  "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house
You do not have to be harsh but you do have to set what is acceptable in your home.

9.  God’s Word is the standard any place that you have influence
…and on your gates.

Summary
1.  He must be Lord
2.  Love Him completely with nothing held back. 
3.  His Word must be in your thoughts

5.  His Word must be a part of your everyday conversation in your home

Joshua 24:15 ¶ "And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
