Life Shape Family Growth and Discipleship Week 10 – A Disciple’s Role in Society

The disciples portrayed in the New Testament were gathered together from all walks of life. Some were fishermen, others worked for the government, Nicodemus was a religious teacher while Joseph was a wealthy business owner, Mary Magdalene was formerly a tortured soul living beneath the moral code of society, Johanna was wife of the chief steward of Herod; rich men, poor men, beggars and thieves, younger and older, husbands, hired hands, tax collectors, lunatics, farmers, field hands and rabbis. Disciples come from all walks of life.

You Are A Special People Unto God

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

You Are A New Creation in Christ

2 Corinthians 5
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

You Are Ambassadors for Christ

2 Corinthians 5
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

Your Role In Society Is To Be His Examples

Memory Verse: 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

We are, as Jesus was, called not to impose our values, morals and beliefs on others but rather to expose our values, morals and beliefs to others.

There is a boundary beyond which tolerance ceases to be a virtue.

Matthew 5
13 You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

As Examples we are to:
  • Make a living
  • Make a life
  • Make a difference

From a position of our evident dependence upon God.

The hungry will hear and the believer will follow.

God is calling the Nations to Payer and Discipleship and He is using us as His mouthpiece.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Numbers 12:3 Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.

Humility is the recognition and admission of our Dependence on God
