Lesson: Follow the Leader

Pastor Ron’s remarks and intro of first principle

First Principle: Obedience
Scripture Reference: Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Obedience is the first lesson we should learn.
Obedience is essential in critical or dangerous times.
For example: When a child is running toward a busy street, things can get critical.
It is imperative that we teach our children to obey our voice before they learn to run.
It is further necessary that we believe our child will obey, even when they don’t want to and even when they see no danger themselves, simply because we speak before we release them to run.
Human nature tends to obey those whom we want to obey and those we are afraid not to obey.
Obedience is the first step.
Question: Who do you obey? (Not who you should obey … but who do you obey?)
Follow Up Question: Can you think of anyone, outside of God, who has the right to tell you go or tell you no?
Conclusion: Obedience is a decision we make every day. Obedience means to simply follow orders. God has established people and positions of authority in our life that He expects us to obey. However, human nature, leads us to follow the orders of those individuals with whom we agree or whenever we feel it is too costly to disobey. Obedience is the first lesson we learn when learning to follow.

Pastor Ron’s remarks and intro of second principle

Second Principle: Submission
Scripture Reference:  Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Submission means to submit yourself as subordinate to another.
Submission also means to arrange yourself in proper order underneath another.
Submission is an attitude which, at times, demands obedience above our agreement with or fear of God’s determined leader.
The authority figures who hold positions of leadership in our lives include: our bosses, our teachers, the head of our household, and others who, at times, for seasons and reasons, are given that position in life.
Question: Can you think of positions to which you are called to submit?
Follow Up Question: Are there people who you feel should be submitted to you?
Support Scripture: James 4:7, Ephesians 5, Luke 22:42
Conclusion: People often feel they are submitted when, in fact, they are not. Submission is never tested until you do not agree with your leader, feel you have a better idea, are unafraid of the consequences, and would prefer to do it differently. Up and unto that point, there has been no demand placed to yield your strength, your preferences, your wisdom, your knowledge, your best interests to the decisions of another. Submission is a recognition of God’s chosen leader and your place in God’s order when you think it should be otherwise.

Pastor Ron’s remarks and intro of third principle

Third Principle: Loyalty
Scripture Reference:  Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
The loyalty we are discussing is our show of support for our leader.
This loyalty takes away our rights of murmuring and complaining before the fact and the desire to say, “I told you so,” after the fact.
The Bible commands us to be of one mind, one voice, and one heart.
It is important that parents present a unified stand on family issues. Although much discussion may take place prior to a decision, post decision support should present a unified front.
Our loyalty is God’s way of fostering a unified and a one voice front.
Dissention within the ranks divides the army. Dissention among the leaders destroys an army. Once a decision is made, the leader should expect his followers to submit, obey, and support.
Question: How do you feel and what do you say about your leaders when your suggestions are overridden?
Follow Up Question: What is the difference between pre decision counsel and post decision support?
Support Scripture: Matthew 16:23
Conclusion: God expects us to obey with a submissive heart so that those who lead us can do so with joy instead of being given grief for doing their job.
