The Christmas Story - Part Two – The Miracle Of Christmas

Gtcotr/ss120907

Key Scripture: Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (NKJV)

Last week we studied the reason for Christmas. It is the fact that:

We Need A Savior

Mankind, created by God and placed into the Garden of Eden, fell into sin and was separated from God. In the Garden God killed an animal and used the skins to clothe Adam and Eve physically.

Why did God choose to sacrifice an animal? Why didn’t He just clothe them with leaves or bark or some other available material?

Hebrews 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

Because He needed the blood! It was the blood that paid for their sin and covered them spiritually.

Hebrews 10:(1-4) 4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

However, it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to eternally cleanse the soul from sin. If that were possible then those types of sacrifices would not have ceased to be offered.

God knowing that man could not save himself in that man’s flesh is weak and God wanting to destroy all sin forever, sent His Only Son, Jesus, to be our Savior. (Romans 8:3 & Hebrews 10:12)

So I ask again … Why Christmas? Because …

We Need A Savior

Today’s Question however is not why but how. How did God do it?

Well, it’s a miracle … it is no secret … but it is a miracle. What is

The Miracle of Christmas – Look with me in:

John 1 NKJV

1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Verse 14 reveals:

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

You guessed it … The Miracle of Christmas begins with the Virgin Birth.

The most read Christmas story is in the Gospel of Luke. It records that fulfillment of the prophecy spoken of in our key scripture.

Key Scripture: Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

In Luke 1 Mary was told that she would become pregnant with the Son of God and that her son would sit upon the throne of David as the promised Messiah.

When Mary heard this she asked a simple yet a very profound question:

Luke 1:34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"

She knew it took two to get pregnant but she could have really understood why.

You see, today we know that every cell in our body has an outer cell wall, a substance called cytoplasm inside the outer wall and then in the very center there is a nucleus.

Inside the nucleus we find:

  • A network of long thread-like materials known as the chromatin which contains hereditary materials. These materials control the activities of the cell. During cell division the chromatin threads condense and become highly coiled structures called chromosomes. Each chromatin thread is made up of proteins and a compound called deoxy-ribonucleic acid or DNA. In the DNA, the hereditary information is stored.

What information is stored within each cell? A detailed schematic of the past, present and future potentials of ancestors, the individual themselves and any offspring. From hair color to height, from physique to psyche, from mental capacity to athletic capabilities, complex potentials are catalogued in detail and contained within each basic building block of life.

Each cell contains 46 chromosomes or 23 matched pairs. Each cell that is except for reproductive cells, specifically the sperm and the egg. Those reproductive cells only have 23 single chromosomes. When the sperm and the egg unite the chromosomes pair up and complete the 46 chromosomes, 23 matched pairs, necessary for cell division, multiplication and reproduction.

When Mary asked the question, “How can this be?”, she was actually more biologically right than she knew. It is impossible for one person to have a child on their own … they only supply 23 of the needed 46 chromosomes to produce life.

What happened? The Christmas Miracle –

* Mary supplied 23 single human chromosomes genetically passed down to her from generation to generation through her ancestors. From Adam to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Judah and Tamar, Salmon and Rahab, Boaz and Ruth, David and Bathsheba and on and on and on until she was born. Mary was product of God’s divinely orchestrated plan and so would be her son. However, she was still 23 chromosomes short of producing life.

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

* God’s Word supplied those other 23 single chromosomes by the power of the Holy Spirit in order to produce Jesus. This is why Jesus is known as both the Son of God and the Son of Man.

* It is Jesus of Nazareth Who has the right to redeem mankind from their sins and bring them into a relationship with His Father God through the miracle of the new birth.

The Christmas Miracle does not end in a manger in the town of Bethlehem. This same Jesus who was born of a virgin as promised by the prophet Isaiah grew to walk the hills and shores of Galilee and teach the scholars in the temple at Jerusalem. He was arrested in Gethsemane, crucified on Calvary, buried in a garden tomb and on the third day was resurrected to life again. This same Jesus is Lord and Messiah, Redeemer and Savior, Healer and Friend. This same Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives and is coming again to receive all who believe in Him and call on His Name into a heavenly reward for all eternity.

The Miracle of Christmas is reaching out to you this morning. Jesus wants to touch you and show you His love. If you don’t know Him this morning, you can. If you are living in sin you can be set free. If you are burdened with the cares of this world He will deliver you.

It begins by asking Jesus to help you. Won’t you stand to you feet this morning. Jesus is the Christmas gift God has waiting for you.
