Educated Christians

Gtcotr/ss092924

Can you imagine a world where people go to school for decades and continue their education for the rest of their lives but never do anything with what they have been taught. You wouldn’t expect that from:

• A farmerA doctorA lawyer
• A dentistA welderA pilot
• A fishermanA cookA barber
• A truck driver or A salesman

The whole education paradigm is aimed at making us more successful by applying what we have learned to help ourselves and others. Most people in the US attend school a minimum of 12 to 14 years. A good number go beyond that in order to specialize in a chosen field hoping to find a job doing something they have been trained to do in school.

Going to school and learning how to do something seems like a waste of time and opportunity if you never apply what you’ve learned. Yet many Christians attend school each week. Some for 20, 30, 40, or even 50 years of their lives, (I’m referring to Sunday School), and never put what have learned into practice. In fact the majority of Born-Again Believers in Jesus Christ who attend Church each week still don’t know how to witness and have never personally led someone to Christ.

I’m not trying to be critical, but it does seem a little odd. Especially when the whole point of the Gospel is to teach and train others to be teachers and trainers of others. It can start with a simple meaningful conversation.

2 Timothy 2:2  And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Like I said, I don’t intend to be critical, but I am a little concerned. Christianity is only one generation away from extinction. Unless we can educate and motivate others to share the Gospel and participate in world missions, the Church will cease to exist within the next 50 years.

You represent the most educated generation of Christians the world has ever known. We know more about the Bible and have greater access to the Gospel than any other generation who came before. Chances are, you have more information about Jesus and the Gospel message than did the Apostle Paul or any of those early Christians in the Churches of Ephesus, Philippi, Colosse, or Corinth. You have the whole Bible and endless commentaries at your fingertips every second of every day. And yet, do you know many people who claim to be Christians can’t even tell you for certain if their spouse or their parents or their children have accepted Jesus as their personal Savior?

Salvation is a personal decision, but it is not a private matter. If there was ever a time in the history of the world in which to boldly and kindly ask your loved ones if they have accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior … it is now! No one who is truly Born-Again and has the Holy Spirit living in their heart will refuse to share their salvation experience with someone who is genuinely willing to listen. Like I said: It can start with a simple yet meaningful conversation – maybe with your children or grandchildren, an office worker or a friend.

Perhaps they have never been asked and then given the time to share their personal belief in Jesus without interruption. It is a very personal decision that often affects people emotionally. Many have hidden their experience with Jesus deep in their heart and it takes time and patience from the listener for them to feel safe enough to talk about it. Sharing something so precious can be difficult but it holds such great rewards

People are won to Christ by the anointing on the testimony of life that was changed by Jesus. There is a spiritual code programmed into the souls of every person waiting to be awakened by the witness of a true Believer in Jesus Christ. A testimony opens hearts and minds when nothing else will.

Allow me to share the last words we have record of Jesus speaking to His disciples before He ascended up into heaven.

Matthew 28 NKJV

18  And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20  “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The fact that Jesus saved my soul and rescued my family from the eternal penalties of sin makes me want to follow Him and tell the whole world this same Good News.

You cannot pay for your own salvation, but You can help to pay for others to be saved. Let me ask you: “What are you putting into the Gospel?”

God has given us a blueprint of His plan to save mankind. We just read it … its called The Great Commission. The Bible is the only picture we have been given of God’s great plan. The New Testament is a picture of a local Church making disciples and sending them out to do world evangelism through spiritually motivated humanitarian relief efforts accompanied by the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Nothing says “I love you” more than helping someone who can’t help you back. A meal when you’re hungry; clothes when you’re naked; a drink when you’re thirsty; a kind word when you’re sick or down on your luck. Yet a meal won’t save a soul … but it will open hearts and minds.

Mark 16 NKJV

19 ¶  So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.

20  And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

Three Considerations:

1. Would you consider giving?

To the Church and to World Missions

2. Would you consider going?

Over the seas and right next door

3. Would you consider sharing?

Your salvation story

A Study in Ruth Part I: From Bitter to Better

The book of Ruth is a ray of light during a time of darkness and godlessness. It is a story of Gods sovereignty, kindness, and redemption.

Date & Place of Writing

The account of Ruth occurs during the time of the judges (death of Joshua - rise of Samuel) 1335-1050BC
The inclusion of Davids genealogy at the end of the book puts the writing sometime after his anointing as king; possibly during his reign.
Dates somewhere between 1050 BC and 500 BC
Jewish tradition holds that the prophet Samuel wrote the book of Ruth
The book of Ruth is told from the perspective of Naomi

Themes

Gods sovereignty
Gods goodness/kindness
Gods redemption

Lets begin reading:

Ruth 1:1-2

In the days when the judges ruled in Israel, a severe famine came upon the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah left his home and went to live in the country of Moab, taking his wife and two sons with him. 2 The mans name was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi. Their two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. And when they reached Moab, they settled there.

Elimelech = God is my king"

Naomi = Pleasant; Kind

Mahlon = Sick

Chilion = Wasting away; suffering; tiresome

Elimelech and Naomis names were a picture of who God is and who He was throughout the book of Ruth. He is both king (sovereign) and He is pleasant/ kind.

Mahlon and Chilions names were a picture of the situation their parents found themselves in.

• In the days when the judges ruled…” - these were dark days they were living in

Judges 21:25 - In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

• There was a famine in the land of Judah

[SHOW MAP]
• Elimelech moves his family to the land of Moab
The Moabites were descendants of Lot, who was the father of Moab
Moab was born out of an incestuous union with his oldest daughter (Gen 19:37)
The Moabites were hostile toward the Israelites
They were wicked; sacrificed their children to pagan gods
Therefore, the Israelites were forbidden to live among the Moabites
• However, Elimelech and Naomi move to Moab anyway and stay for 10 years. Elimelech probably was trying to do what he thought was best in the midst of his situation. However, He stepped outside the will of God. When times got tough, Elimelech went to the land of Moab.

When times get tough, what do you do? Where do you go? Do you trust God in the midst of your situation? Or do you go to Moab? Do you lean on doing what is right in your own eyes?

When times get difficult financially, in our marriage, at work, let us not go to Moab” and simply do what is right in our own eyes. Instead, let us trust God in the midst of our troubles. God has a plan.

Tragedy Strikes

3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

• Things go from bad to worse
• Naomi loses her husband in Moab
• Naomi then loses her two sons in Moab
• Naomi was living in a wicked and perverse place while surviving the loss of her husband and two sons
• As a childless widow, Naomi had socially become one of the least in that day. She had no one to support her. She probably knew at this point that her life was going to be reliant on the generosity of others.
• Naomi was at the lowest point in her life. She imagined that Gods hand was against her. She imagined she was deserving of the punishment” that she had received from God. She had become bitter at life due to the circumstances that had been handed to her. She would even go as far as identifying with her troubles by changing her name to bitter.

However, God was not trying to punish Naomi for her past decisions. Instead, God was looking ahead to remedy the situation.
• At times we may think God has His hand against us and is punishing us for our past mistakes. However, that is not who God is. God does not punish us for our past mistakes; He provides us with grace for our future.

Do not allow your circumstances to define who you are. Instead, trust that God has a plan. If things are still bad, then God is not finished.

Ray of Hope in the Land of Moab

6 Then she rose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

• In the midst of the darkest moment in her life, outside the will of God, God spoke to Naomi in the land of Moab. The Way-Maker was making a way for her to return back home to the land of promise.

Naomi had lived in Moab for 10 years. Bethlehem, her hometown, was only about a days walk, she could have returned home at any time. However, her sons had married Moabite women. A part of her life was stuck in Moab. Although God was her sovereign king who was good to her, there was a part of her life where she was still doing what was right in her own eyes. Therefore she stayed in Moab all those years.

We must ask ourselves, are there areas of our life where we are still doing what is right in our own eyes? In order for us to leave Moab, we have to trust Gods leading. Gods leading will always bring us back to His promises.

The Way-maker was making a way toward a future filled with hope. Like Naomi, all we have to do is start walking.
• Ultimately, God provides Naomi with new beginnings; whether she realized it or not. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Naomis life. This marked the beginning of the story of Ruth.

Takeaways:

1. When things get tough, trust in the Lord.
2. If things are still bad, God is not finished.
3. One decision can change the trajectory of your life
Naomi trusted the words she heard in Moab and began walking home. That act of faith began a new day in her life.
We too can make one decision that would change the trajectory of our life. What is that decision for you?

Left Behind

Gtcotr/ss092224

Early on a Saturday morning, January 27, 1996, I was awakened from a dream. In the dream I was in a Church filled with about 200 men praising God, when a minister stepped to the platform and said:

“Since you left the world behind, have you gotten any closer to Jesus?”

I wrote it down, pondered the question, and studied what it meant to be closer to Jesus for over 8 years before sharing that dream in a sermon I preached on September 15, 2004.

Now, more than 20 years later, my heart is still burdened. Do you know Jesus? Are you closer to Him than you were last year?

I truly hope the messages I preach help you to be a better person but if that’s all you get out of coming to Church, we are missing the boat. The reason we leave the world behind is to follow Christ!

You can become a better person by learning what to stop and what to start. You can work hard and change everything about yourself and the way you were. You can learn new and better ways and save yourself and others a lot of trouble, heartache and pain. But the one thing you cannot save is your soul.

No amount of change will save your soul. Only Jesus can save your soul. You must be born againSalvation is more than leaving the world behind. Salvation is more than becoming a better person … salvation comes by giving our lives to Jesus and following Him.

Mark 10

17 ¶  Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”

• The question was about eternal life … life after death …
• The question about heaven and hell and how do I know?
• What can I do?

18  So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

19  “You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”

20  And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.”

• I have done everything I know to do and yet something is missing.
• I am a good person … I treat every person with respect …
• Yet I have no peace concerning my eternity …
• Something was missing … it was His relationship with God.

21  Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

22  But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23  Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”

This perplexed the disciples. If this young man who was really, really, good was not going to get into the Kingdom of God … what chance did they have?

24  And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!

Jesus was pointing to the fact that this man treated people good but treated God with disregard. He was afraid of God, but He didn’t love Him. He was concerned about eternity but more concerned about his comfort and security now. Peter wanted to make sure he wasn’t missing anything himself.

Mark 10:28  Peter said to Him, “We have left everything to follow You!

Peter said “We …” Who is the we Peter is talking about?

• Himself and his brother Andrew.
• James and his brother John.
• The other Disciple/Apostles.
• And everyone since who has left the world and followed Jesus.
• Following Jesus means to make Him first place in your life.

There is only one first place. Jesus said it this way:

Matthew 6:24  “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other, you can’t serve both God and money.

• Peter and Andrew left their livelihood to follow Jesus.
• James and John left their inheritance to follow Jesus.
• Matthew left his government job to follow Jesus.
• The woman caught in adultery left her chosen profession to follow Jesus.
• The Samaritan woman at the well left her religious beliefs to follow Jesus.
• People from all walks of life left:
Their comfort
Their culture
Social Positions
Political Affiliations
Family
Friends
Familiar Ways of Life, all to follow Jesus and to make God number one in their lives.
The Young Rich Ruler of Mark 10 would not leave the security of his money to follow Jesus.
▪ He trusted more in earthly riches than heavenly relationship.
▪ What do you trust in?
What have you left behind for Jesus?

Jesus left His throne in glory for you. What expense is it for you to leave your throne for Him?

“Since you left the world behind, have you gotten any closer to Jesus?”

Where can you start? Here is a simple, yet effective, prayer.

• I want You to be first place in my life.
• If there is anything in Your place - reveal it to me.
• Jesus, I lay aside those things which conflict with Your Lordship.
• Please remove from me those things which I cannot remove myself.
